USA's ancient hurricane belt and the US-Canada equator

The recent storms that have battered settlements on the east coast of America may have been much more frequent in the region 450 million years ago, according to scientists. New research pinpointing the positions of the Equator and the landmasses of the USA, Canada and Greenland, during the Ordovician Period 450 million years ago, indicates that the equator ran down the western side of North America with a hurricane belt to the east.

The hurricane belt would have affected an area covering modern day New York State, New Jersey and most of the eastern seaboard of the USA.

An international research team led by Durham University, UK, used the distribution of fossils and sediments to map the line of the Ordovician Equator down to southern California.

The study, published in the journal Geology, is the first to accurately locate and map the ancient Equator and adjacent tropical zones.

Previous studies had fuelled controversy about the precise location of the ancient equator. The researchers say the new results show how fossils and sediments can accurately track equatorial change and continental shifts over time.

Co-lead author Professor David Harper, Department of Earth Sciences, Durham University, UK, said: "The equator, equatorial zones and hurricane belts were in quite different places in the Ordovician.

It is likely that the weather forecast would have featured frequent hurricane-force storms in New York and other eastern states, and warmer, more tropical weather from Seattle to California."

Since Polar Regions existed 450 million years ago, the scientists believe that there would have been similar climate belts to those of today.

The research team from Durham University, UK, and universities in Canada, Denmark and the USA, discovered a belt of undisturbed fossils and sediments -deposits of shellfish- more than 6000 km long stretching from the south-western United States to North Greenland.

The belt also lacks typical storm-related sedimentary features where the deposits are disturbed by bad weather. The researchers say that this shows that the Late Ordovician equatorial zone, like the equatorial zone today, had few hurricane-grade storms.

In contrast, sedimentary deposits recorded on either side of the belt provide evidence of disturbance by severe storms. Hurricanes tend to form in the areas immediately outside of equatorial zones where temperatures of at least 260C combine with the Earth's rotation to create storms.

The researchers believe that hurricane belts would probably have existed on either side of the ancient equator, within the tropics.

The position of the equatorial belt, defined by undisturbed fossil accumulations and sediments, is coincident with the Late Ordovician equator interpreted from magnetic records (taken from rocks of a similar age from the region). This provides both a precise equatorial location and confirms that the Earth's magnetic field operated much in the same way as it does today.

The scientists pieced together the giant jigsaw map using the evidence of the disturbed and undisturbed sedimentary belts together with burrows and shells. Using the findings from these multiple sites, they were able to see that North America sat on either side of the Equator.

Co-author Christian Rasmussen, University of Copenhagen, said: "The layers of the earth build up over time and are commonly exposed by plate tectonics. We are able to use these ancient rocks and their fossils as evidence of the past to create an accurate map of the Ordovician globe."

Professor Harper added: "The findings show that we had the same climate belts of today and we can see where North America was located 450 million years ago, essentially on the Equator."

"While the Equator has remained in approximately the same place over time, the landmasses have shifted dramatically over time through tectonic movements. The undisturbed fossil belt helps to locate the exact position of the ancient Laurentian landmass, now known as North America."

The study is funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research.

Getco eyes $1.4 billion deal with Knight Capital

(Reuters) - Getco Holding Co proposed a $1.4 billion deal that would see it merge into Knight Capital Group Inc , while Virtu Financial LLC offered to buy Knight for at least $1.1 billion, according to sources familiar with the situation on Wednesday.

The main attraction for Getco and Virtu, both trading firms, is Knight's U.S. market-making business, which uses computer models to match buy and sell orders in stocks and options and executes around 10 percent of U.S. equity trading volume.

But the approach of the two firms to a deal with Knight differ, and it remained unclear which - if any - would be able to clinch a deal. Knight's shares were up 13.5 percent in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Getco's proposal effectively would see it bought by Knight, while Getco's management, led by Chief Executive Daniel Coleman, would take control of the combined firm. The combined firm would be publicly traded, which would allow General Atlantic, which invested in Getco in 2007, to take the firm public. Getco also already has a 23.8 percent stake in Knight.

Getco's cash and stock deal would value the combined company at $3.50 per share, according to a regulatory filing and sources close to Getco. That is a 41 percent premium over Knight's closing price on November 23, the day before rumors of possible offers for Knight appeared in news reports.

Virtu offered to take Knight private for at least $3 a share in cash and take it private, a source with knowledge of the offer said. Virtu would look to sell off Knight's businesses other than market-making.

Private equity firm Silver Lake, an investor in Virtu, would be a backer of such a deal, along with other unnamed investors, the source said.

Knight makes markets and trades in more than 19,000 U.S. equities. For the first nine month of 2012, Knight's U.S. market-making unit traded an average of 3 billion shares a day.

Besides being a market maker, Knight runs bond and foreign exchange trading platforms and owns a reverse mortgage lender. It also holds a stake of about 20 percent in Direct Edge, the No. 4 U.S. cash equities exchange.

Knight acknowledged receiving Getco's offer but did not comment further.

The bidding for Knight comes months after the firm had to be rescued over the summer by Getco and other investors. It suffered a trading loss of $440 million in August due to a software glitch that unleashed a flood of orders to the New York Stock Exchange.

The rescue was led by Jefferies Group , and also included Blackstone Group LP , Stephens Inc and financial services companies TD Ameritrade Holding Corp and Stifel Financial .

As part of the deal, General Atlantic, Blackstone and TD Ameritrade, were given seats on Knight's board.

GETCO OFFER

Chicago-based Getco, the No. 2 designated market maker at the New York Stock Exchange with more than 850 listing assignments, disclosed its offer in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday. The filing included an offer letter to Knight directors.

Getco is proposing a two-step deal. The first step would involve Knight buying Getco in exchange for 242 million newly issued shares and warrants, with different strike prices, to buy an additional 69 million shares.

In the second step, the combined entity would launch a tender offer to buy up to 154 million shares at a cash price of $3.50 per share. Getco and its former owners would not participate in the tender offer.

The deal would leave the new company with more debt. Getco said it has lined up $950 million of fully committed financing from a "large financial institution."

Knight CEO Tom Joyce would become chairman of the board under the terms of the proposed deal. The Getco proposal also calls for four directors of the new company to be nominated by Getco shareholders. Sources said Getco is ready to proceed with the deal as early as December 3.

Knight shares were up 40 cents to $3.37 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Congo: Hutu rebel group attacks Rwanda

KIBUMBA, Congo (AP) ? Congo residents and M23 rebels say that another rebel group, the FDLR, has crossed the border into Rwanda and is fighting the Rwandan army.

An M23 officer who would only give his name as Lt. Paluku and people who live in the Congolese village of Kibumba say they have heard fighting at the border since 5 a.m.

Hours later AP journalists were fired at by FDLR soldiers retreating from the border. No reporters were injured.

The Democratic Force for the Liberation of Rwanda, known by its French acronym FDLR, is a group of Hutu extremists, many of whom are blamed for leading Rwanda's 1994 genocide of Tutsis. FDLR members fled to eastern Congo after the massacres. The FDLR has fought the Rwandan army, the Congo army and other militias.

(AP) ? The convertible hit Phillip Moreno so hard that it knocked him out of his shoes and lodged him in the windshield.

As he lay dying on the hood, police said, Sherri Lynn Wilkins kept going another two miles until other motorists swarmed her car at a traffic light and grabbed her keys.

Wilkins, who was charged Tuesday with murder and driving drunk, told police she struck the man after leaving work and panicked. Police said her blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.

Her arrest on a street corner between home and her job as a drug and alcohol counselor seemed to be a return to a dark past that Wilkins once celebrated leaving behind. The convict and recovering addict had recently gone back to school, gotten a job and was reuniting with her family, including a new grandchild.

"It's a really tragic situation for both parties," said her neighbor, Crystal Witherspoon. "I'm trying to understand it myself, because from what I knew of her, she was a kind-hearted person. She was trying very hard."

Tami Jimenez, a recovering alcoholic who worked with Wilkins, said the case serves as a bitter reminder for all addicts about the dangers of relapse.

"I'm headed for a meeting tonight," she said. "It's unfortunate and it's tragic and it's sad, but it's a reminder that the disease of addiction can take you out at any time."

Wilkins' arraignment was postponed until next month at a brief court hearing Tuesday. She was ordered held on $2.25 million bail.

Twenty members of Moreno's extended family attended the hearing and spoke afterward of the fun-loving man who adored the Lakers and the Raiders and was a whiz at remembering sports statistics. Moreno was nicknamed "Chud" because of his love of Budweiser beer and spent his last day watching college football with friends.

"We thank the citizens who stopped Wilkins and gave him some peace in his waning moments," family attorney Kevin Danesh said outside court. "Anyone who would dare to drink and drive, let this be a lesson to them."

Danesh said the family is also seeking answers about where Wilkins was before the accident. Her boss has said it was unlikely she was coming from work, as she told police, so late on a Saturday.

Moreno had three beers at a bar called The Branch Office just a half-block from the accident scene on Saturday and left around 11 p.m. to walk home, said bartender Virginia Zarate. Less than an hour later, police swarmed the streets, tracing their way back to the initial impact, she said.

"We started seeing a bunch of lights and we went out, and the cops said it was a hit-and-run, but we had no clue who it was," she said as a memorial of balloons, flowers and candles sprouted up down the street.

Wilkins' arrest shocked friends, who said she was working to rebuild her life after a criminal record stretching back more than 20 years.

She attended Loyola Marymount University, where she was enrolled in an alcohol and drug counseling certification program and was hired by Twin Town Treatment Centers a year ago to work with other addicts in a group setting, said David Lisonbee, the company CEO.

She ran evening sessions at the Torrance location and consistently received high marks on evaluations by patients, he said. Wilkins often stayed late to meet one-on-one with patients who were struggling and helped one client with homework assignments after realizing he couldn't read, Jimenez said.

"We've gotten some calls from people saying, 'She really saved my life,'" Jimenez said. "Everybody loved Sherri, the employees, the patients, just everybody loved her."

Most recently, Wilkins was thrilled with the birth of her granddaughter ? her first grandchild ? but struggled with ankle pain from an accident and was considering surgery to fix the problem, Jimenez said.

On her Myspace profile, Wilkins noted that she had been drug-free for 11 years, was a Buddhist and was planning trips to Chicago to see her daughter, a medical intern, and to Hawaii.

"I used to be into drugs very heavy, with that came terrible choices, the loss of all my family and freedom. Today four of my children are in my life," Wilkins wrote.

Lisonbee, her boss, confirmed the woman in the Myspace profile was Wilkins.

Court records show Wilkins was convicted of first-degree burglary in 1989 and a month later of having narcotics while in custody. In 1994, she was convicted along with a co-defendant on one count of burglary and given nine years in prison.

In 2001, Wilkins was convicted of having a controlled substance into a jail or a prison, said Luis Patino, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections.

Prison records show she was paroled in 2008, he said.

Two years later, Wilkins was arrested for hit-and-run after she knocked over a power pole that was then hit by three other cars, said Assistant City Attorney Patrick Sullivan.

She had no alcohol or drugs in her system, however, and the case was dismissed when she and the owners of other vehicles reached an agreement, he said.

(AP) ? Adele is rolling in the records.

The 24-year-old British songstress's album "21" has sold more than 10 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album reached the milestone last week, less than two years after its release.

"21" is the 21st album to sell 10 million copies since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

Adele's sophomore studio album debuted in 2011 and featured such hits as "Rolling in the Deep," ''Someone Like You" and "Set Fire to the Rain."

It's the third album to reach the 10 million mark in 2012. Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" and Usher's "Confessions" both crossed the 10 million mark earlier this year.

Adele won in all six categories she was nominated in at the Grammys earlier this year, including album of the year.

Problems with Fish Oil Supplements | Men's Health News

There's something fishy going on with your supplement.

Fish oil faithfuls beware: Thirty-one percent of omega-3 supplements are mislabeled or have quality issues, according to recent tests by ConsumerLab.com.

When ConsumerLab tested 35 omega-3 supplements on the market, they found startling results. Four supplements contained 20 percent to 30 percent less omega-3s than the labels claimed, one product contained spoiled fish oil, and three products contained two to three times the claimed amounts of fatty acids. One incorrectly claimed to contain 1 milligram (mg) of fat, but actually contained 1,000 mg. (You can buy the full report here.)

If you do take a supplement, your best bet is Swanson EFA?s Super EPA, according to Tod Cooperman, M.D., President of ConsumerLab.com. It rated well in the study, and at just six cents a pill and packing 500 mg of omega-3s (most experts suggest 300 to 500 mg per day), it?s both safe and inexpensive. To know exactly which supplements you need to take every day, find out The Top 10 Supplements for Men.

US, Russia name crew for yearlong space mission

MOSCOW (AP) ? NASA and Russia's Roscosmos have named the two men who will spend a year aboard the International Space Station to gather more data about the effects of weightlessness on humans.

NASA's Scott Kelly and Roscosmos' Mikhail Kornienko will take part in the mission set to start in spring 2015. The space agencies said in a statement Monday that the flight would help reduce health risks for planned NASA missions around the moon, an asteroid and ultimately Mars.

Crews so far have done only six-month stints on the station.

William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator, said the mission "will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit."

Kelly and Kornienko will start training for the mission next year.

Great! So post it, right? Not so fast. Actually, users already do retain copyrights in whatever original content they have posted; remember that under American law,
copyright attaches automatically to ?original works of authorship that are fixed in a tangible form.?

What Facebook?s Terms of Service do, however, is give Facebook the right to use such content subject to certain restrictions:

For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your?privacy and?application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). If you?re already using Facebook, you can make sure you don?t post anything that you wouldn?t want Facebook to use or delete it (and make sure anyone who has shared it has also deleted it).

Facebook copyright and privacy concerns have long been a contentious subject; indeed, every time Facebook touches one of its policies, you can bet that a notice similar to the one posted above will begin floating around Facebook thereafter. But the next time you see one of these kinds of statuses all over your news feed, please do your Facebook friends a favor and check it out before posting.

And if you?re one of the people spreading these things, please proofread. The ?Berner Convention? may have happened on some fiery stovetop somewhere, but the Berne Convention deals with the protection of literary and artistic works.

Walk, Bike, Swim Your Way to Better Hearing | Hearing Aid News ...

In this world of confusing and conflicting information it is sometimes difficult to know what is good for us, and what isnt. The latest hot diet or a popular herbal supplement might be touted as the miracle cure-all, only to be dispelled later when new scientific data unearths the harmful side effects.

With all the fads that are thrown at us, how do we separate fact from hype? How can we know what is truly beneficial for our health, and what is outright dangerous?

One way to debunk the myths beyond relying on common sense ? is to look at the validity and longevity of various claims. Ask yourself: has a particular claim been verified and endorsed by the mainstream medical and scientific community; does it withstand the test of time; or is it just a flash in the pan?

While many so-called facts will fall by the wayside, one steadfastly remains: a link between regular cardiovascular workout and improved hearing. Simply put, maintaining healthy blood vessels and heart through exercise can benefit your ears.

Be Fit, Hear Better

Past and current studies conducted at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio show a direct relation between cardiovascular (CV) fitness and better hearing.

Though hearing acuity and, ultimately, hearing thresholds, are not entirely under our control, changes in certain aspects of physiological health have been shown to impact hearing sensitivity, says Kathleen Hutchinson PhD, Chair and Professor of the universitys Speech Pathology and Audiology Department. Namely, cardiovascular health has been shown to have a synergistic relationship to a persons hearing. We have proven in prior studies that cardiovascular health is linked to hearing thresholds.

Dr. Hutchinson is referring to the research study she and her colleagues, Helaine Alessio, Ph.D., of the Department of Kinesiology and Health, and Rachel Baiduc, B.S., Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, conducted at Miami University several years ago.

At that time, we found striking consistency whereby persons with low CV fitness, regardless of age, always had worse hearing compared to age-matched individuals with moderate or high CV fitness, Dr. Hutchinson says. Cardiovascular health and fitness seems to be an important mediator of hearing sensitivity.

New Studies, Same Findings

The team is taking the research further, expanding on the knowledge already gained through its previous studies. For example, another variable, otoacoustic emissions ? sounds produced by healthy ears in response to acoustic stimulation have been added to the tests.

By investigating otoacoustic emissions, a way to evaluate the integrity of the cells in the nerve of hearing, we are provided with another lens to examine the relationship between CV fitness and hearing, Dr. Hutchinson explains. The nerve involved in hearing has the very important job of collecting sound gathered by the outer and middle ear and preparing it for transmission to the brain.

For this study, subjects underwent a battery of hearing tests, including otoscopic examination (observation into the subjects ear to ensure that occlusions interfering with the testing process, such as wax build-up, were not present), pure tone hearing thresholds (subjects would indicate when tones of various loudness and pitch were heard to determine a threshold), tympanometry (a measure of ear drum mobility), and others.

Preliminary analysis of the data, Dr. Hutchinson says, reveals a link between hearing and a high cardiovascular fitness level. Though these results clearly produce clinical significance for persons with hearing loss, they are also relevant to all listeners, she says. By maintaining a high level of cardiovascular fitness, even in older age, individuals can help to preserve their delicate hearing system. It is highly recommended that unfit individuals begin even a moderate-intensity workout regime if there is history of hearing loss in the family. Cardiovascular fitness levels do decrease in most people with age, regardless of sedentary or active lifestyles. However, by keeping as fit as possible, one not only lessens the chance of health concerns related to being unfit, but also increases the chance of sustaining normal hearing thresholds even into old age.

The Heart Knows

The fact that the heart muscle needs regular conditioning is nothing new. Doctors have been telling us for years that exercise makes us more resistant to stress, heart attack, and a slew of other health complications.

For optimum results, the American Heart Association advises doing 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise at least three or four times each week. Unfortunately, studies show that 60 percent of American adults don?t get the recommended amount of physical activity, and a quarter of all adults are not active at all.

But too often the word exercise gets a bad rap, because many of us think of it in conjunction with feeling the burn, that unpleasant sensation of tears and pulls all over our bodies.

Relax; there is no need to huff, puff, sweat, or suffer because moderate exercise, if done regularly, is just as effective as the high-impact kind, and far less harsh on the joints. Such enjoyable and fun activities as walking, hiking, biking, and swimming are an excellent cardiovascular workout, doctors say, and dont require expensive equipment or gym membership.

As the studies clearly indicate, the key to a better hearing and a good overall health is, literally, just an easy step or lap away.

Remember: stay fit. Your heart and ears ? will thank you for it.

Sol Republic Tracks Ultra Headphones

Sol Republic Tracks Ultra Headphones

I love these headphones, they have an even fuller sound than the Sol Republic Tracks Headphones. The sound is great loud, and even better really loud. Plus, you can change the headband and cables to suit your own personal taste. I like that these head phones come with a light sleeve to hold everything together while traveling or for storage. The cushion on these headphones is just as soft and comfortable as those on the original Tracks headphones, they are really comfortable on your ears. There?s no outside sound interference like you usually find with ear buds and some on-ear headphones, which makes the sound even better. I would happily recommend these headphones to anyone looking for On-Ear Headphones with a clean and clear full-bodied sound. As such, they are definitely a must for inclusion in this year?s Mom Knows It All Holiday Gift Guide.

CHANGING OLD PATTERNS

Changing old patterns is the first step to succeeding with your goals.

How do we look at fitness and wellness?

Where does is it on your priority list?

In order to change anything in life you need to give it your all!

Make your health and wellness a priority. Many people find they put there own needs on hold to take care of others. But in essence you are taking your own health for granted, until it is not there. My question for you is why wait to possibly feel un well or even get sick to start taking care of your yourself.

Exercising and eating well now may save you hours even years of sick time in the future and also have more energy for the rest of your life and commitments. Regular physical activity has many benefits including better health and greater vitality.

How do we look at fitness and wellness? All too often, people think of exercise as a punishment or painful experience, time consuming and obligatory. If this is how you truly feel, you are setting yourself up for failure.

You could instead think of it as a chance to unwind from a stressful day, a little time all to yourself and a way to improve your quality of life. Take some time and truly ask yourself what your thoughts around fitness and wellness really are. You may need to change the way you are thinking before you move on to even setting your first fitness and wellness goal. This may be what has kept you from succeeding in the past.

Look at some of the reasons why you may have not succeeded in the past when you tried to set other fitness goals.

How long did the routine last?

What happened to get in your way?

Where was fitness and wellness on your priority list?

Were your goals realistic?

Did you feel like a failure?

In order to make changes we must spend some time first clearing out old thought patterns and beginning with new positive plans for the health we deserve to have.

Remember this is your body and life you are in control of all your choices.

No. 5 Duke beats Minnesota 89-71

(AP) ? It sounds as if Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is putting together a screenplay: "The Maturation of Mason Plumlee."

So far the reviews have been great.

Plumlee scored 20 points and grabbed a career high-matching 17 rebounds to lead No. 5 Duke to an 89-71 victory over Minnesota on Thursday in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

The 6-foot-10 senior had four solid games this season before putting on an impressive performance against a team known for being physical and playing defense.

"Maturity is what you need to be this good," Krzyzewski said. "Most kids don't figure that out. He has. And it wasn't a case of him being immature before, he has just matured."

Seth Curry scored 25 points for Duke (4-0), which will face VCU in Friday's semifinals. The Rams beat No. 19 Memphis 78-65.

Plumlee was coming off a career-high 28 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the field, 10 of 11 from the free throw line and had nine rebounds in the Blue Devils' previous game, an 88-67 win over Florida Gulf Coast.

He was 8 of 10 from the free throw after coming in 17 of 22 (77.3 percent). That is very impressive for a guy who shot 52.8 percent from the line last season and 54.3 percent and 44.1 percent the two seasons before.

"I'm in a role that I love and feel like I am in control and confident in myself and my team," Plumlee said. "I think guys like Quinn (Cook) stepping up playing great and Ryan (Kelly) is playing better too. I think everything is heading in the right direction."

Sophomore point guard Quinn Cook had a career-high 17 points for the Blue Devils who extended their regular-season tournament winning streak to 21 games, a run that stretches to the championship game of the 2006 CBE Classic.

"My job is to communicate with everybody and be a leader," Cook said. "My teammates have confidence in me and know I can do what I have to when things break down."

Ryan Kelly had 14 points for Duke and freshman Rasheed Sulaimon, the fifth starter, added 11. The only points scored by a non-starter were the two from Amile Jefferson. Only four reserves played for Duke.

"We're not going to score that much from our bench, that's not what those guys have to do when they get in the game," Krzyzewski said. "It doesn't always have to be a certain way. These guys come in to make the hustle plays, rebound, defend. Do what we need to be done."

Rodney Williams had 16 points for the Golden Gophers (4-1), who just couldn't cut into the Blue Devils' lead in the second half.

"I think we had a couple of lapses on defense," Williams said. "Duke hit some big shots in the second half when we were playing good defense."

Duke's lead ranged from 10 to 13 points throughout most of the second half. Minnesota, a team known for its toughness and defense, met its match in the Blue Devils, who were just as physical as the Gophers, and were more so through the last 5 minutes when Duke pulled away.

"K's teams are always hard to play and that means they are hard to beat," Minnesota coach Tubby Smith said. "Plumlee is really good."

Curry was 8 of 11 from the field and Duke finished 30 of 55 (54.5 percent). Curry made all three of his 3-point attempts and the Blue Devils were 8 of 10 from beyond the arc.

Minnesota had held its first three opponents to 28.6 shooting from the field and 19.1 percent on 3s while giving up 48.0 points per game.

Obviously Duke was a little bit better than the Gophers' first three opponents.

"We felt we could try and get physical with our three big guys but he's just a real talented player," Smith said. "Game plans are meant to work but it didn't today."

This was Duke's 150th consecutive game ranked in the Top Ten and the Blue Devils are 150-30 in those games.

Business Owners: Prepare For Deal-Seeking Customers ...

Reported by foodem.com, the online wholesale food marketplace-

Two of the biggest shopping days of the year are without a doubt here, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Businesses near and far are ramping up their holiday promotions, while gearing up for hoards of deal-seeking crowds. There are TV and radio commercials, Facebook ads and Twitter ads fighting for the attention of eager shoppers.

According to an October survey from credit card comparison and financial education website, CreditDonkey.com, 41% of consumers will participate in the Black Friday shopping craze, while a whopping 57% will shop a few days later on Cyber Monday. In addition, most respondents said they planned to spend less this year, compared to last year.

As business owners, you know what this means, right? There will be inquires, complaints, limited patience (on your end and the customer?s end) and a rushed attitude. Remember, customers are research-savvy these days. They know what items or services they want and the price. Business owners must be on their customer service game, no matter if they?re an e-Commerce company or have a physical establishment.

Customer service is critical during the holiday season. Being personable, offering loyalty programs and incentives, and keeping a vigilant eye out for unhappy customers are just a few musts. Furthermore, don?t overlook social platforms. Be mindful that a good portion of your customers will take to your social profiles to express their happiness or anger per their shopping experience, and they expect customer service issues to be resolved via those platforms.

In October, SAP and Social Media Today released research which found that 71% of companies worldwide provided customer service through social media; the most common social media channel for providing customer service was Facebook (43% of respondents rated Facebook most effective), followed by Twitter (second most effective cited by 28% of respondents).

The proof is in the pudding, business owners have to be savvy when dealing with customers and customer service related issues. The key is to put yourself in the customer?s shoes and think about how you would want to be treated. That?s easy, right?

U.S. consumers less willing to buy Hyundai, Kia after mileage woes - report

SEOUL (Reuters) - U.S. consumers have become less willing to buy cars from Hyundai Motor Co and Kia Motors Corp since the South Korean automakers admitted overstating the fuel economy of some of their vehicles, data from Edmunds.com showed.

Hyundai and Kia earlier this month admitted they had overstated the fuel efficiency ratings on more than 1 million recently sold vehicles in the United States and Canada, tainting the reputations of two carmakers that had centered their marketing campaigns on claims of superior mileage. The news has driven their share prices down sharply.

The "purchase intent" for Hyundai's top-selling Elantra compact fell to 6.3 percent as of November 18 from 6.7 percent on October 28, according to the data from Edmunds.com, an auto consultant and consumer website.

The Elantra is one of four models that were falsely touted as "40-mile-per-gallon" cars. The other three models - Hyundai's Veloster and Accent and Kia's Rio - also suffered declines in purchase intent.

Kia's Soul saw the largest fall in purchase intent, down 1.9 percentage points to 7.3 percent from 9.2 percent. Fuel economy for the Soul was overstated by 6 miles per gallon on highways, the biggest overstatement among the vehicles involved.

"In the U.S., Hyundai in particular has made a media and consumer 'talking point' of the number of 40-miles-per-gallon vehicles it sells and how well it sells those models, so this development has been considerably embarrassing," Bill Visnic, a senior editor at Edmunds.com, told Reuters by email.

He said "purchase intent" is highly correlated with purchasing a model within the next three months.

On November 2, Hyundai immediately apologized and agreed to compensate owners for the additional fuel costs, but Visnic said the cost could increase given lawsuits over against the false mileage claims.

"Also, there could be a cost in future business as this development may have a direct impact on Hyundai's credibility with some U.S. buyers," Visnic said.

Moody's Investors Service previously estimated that the automakers' compensation plan would cost them $100 million a year until the cars are scrapped but has not estimated potential legal costs.

Former N.H. Sen. Warren Rudman dies at 82 | NOLA.com

(Photo by AP Photo/Ron Edmonds, File)

CONCORD, N.H. -- Former Sen. Warren B. Rudman, who co-authored a ground-breaking budget balancing law, championed ethics and led a commission that predicted the danger of homeland terrorist attacks before 9/11, has died. He was 82.

Rudman died just before midnight Monday at a Washington, D.C., hospital of complications of lymphoma, said his spokesman, Bob Stevenson.

The feisty New Hampshire Republican went to the Senate in 1981 with a reputation as a tough prosecutor, and was called on by Senate leaders, and later by presidents of both parties, to tackle tough assignments.

He is perhaps most well-known from his Senate years as co-sponsor of the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings budget-cutting law. He left the Senate in 1993, frustrated that the law never reached its potential because Congress, President Ronald Reagan and the President George H.W. Bush played politics instead of insisting on spending cuts.

"People are willing to risk their lives for their country in times of war," he said at the time. "They ought to be able to risk an election in a time of economic trouble."

In 2001, before the 9/11 attacks, he co-authored a report on national security with former Colorado Sen. Gary Hart that said a major terrorist attack on American soil was likely within 25 years.

"No one seemed to take it seriously, and no one in the media seemed to care," Rudman said in 2007. "The report went into a dustbin in the White House."

It was revived after the Sept. 11 attacks, and one suggestion, forming a Homeland Security Department, was adopted. Six years later, Rudman said the sprawling department wasn't functioning well and the country would be hit again.

"It is not a question, I'm sorry to tell you, of 'if.' It's a question of 'when,'" Rudman said in the 2007 New Hampshire appearance.

A former New Hampshire attorney general, Rudman was named chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee in 1985, a sensitive job that many colleagues avoided.

Throughout his Senate career, Rudman was cited for his work on the Defense Appropriations subcommittee, where he supported a strong national defense but opposed expensive, high-tech weaponry.

The Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Act was approved in 1985. It was designed to end federal deficits by 1991 and required automatic spending cuts if annual deficit targets were missed.

Congress rolled back the timetable each year, and the 1991 budget that was supposed to be balanced carried the second-highest deficit in history. In 1995, 10 years after the law went on the books, Rudman lamented what could have been.

"Had we stuck to that plan, had the Congress not failed to follow it through -- in fact, had presidents not failed to follow through -- we would not be where we are today," Rudman said.

He said balancing the budget would require making wealthy retirees pay more of their medical costs, slowing the growth of discretionary spending, cutting waste in some agencies and eliminating unnecessary agencies.

He continued the fight after leaving the Senate. He and former Democratic Sen. Paul Tsongas of Massachusetts founded the Concord Coalition, which campaigns for a balanced budget.

During the biggest scandal of the Reagan years, Rudman, an outspoken member of the Senate's Iran-Contra Committee, said key administration officials had showed "pervasive dishonesty" and disdain for the law by selling weapons to Nicaraguan rebels.

During the 1987 hearings, he lectured Marine Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, the operation's key figure, about helping to hide the sale from Congress for fear it would have been rejected.

"The American people have the constitutional right to be wrong," he told North. "And what Ronald Reagan thinks or Oliver North thinks or what I think or what anybody else thinks makes not a whit."

Rudman also served on the committee that investigated the "Keating Five," senators with ties to the savings and loan debacle in 1991. The committee found California Democrat Alan Cranston had improperly aided former savings and loan executive Charles Keating Jr. When Cranston said he only did what others did, Rudman called the defense "arrogant, unrepentant, and a smear on this institution."

With no experience in elective politics, Rudman arrived in the Senate by winning an 11-candidate primary in 1980, then defeating Democratic incumbent John Durkin.

He was born May 18, 1930, in Boston, graduated from Syracuse University in 1952 and won his law degree from Boston College in 1960.

In six years as state attorney general, beginning in 1970, Rudman established consumer protection and environmental divisions.

As a private citizen after leaving office, he founded and led the Citizens Alliance Against Casinos in 1977, to keep casino gambling out of New Hampshire.

After Rudman left the Senate in 1993, President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, appointed him vice chairman of the influential President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.

He also led or was a member of investigative teams or federal commissions that looked into:

An $11 billion accounting failure scandal at Fannie Mae, the mortgage company.

  • Allegations that major dealers on the Nasdaq stock market colluded to fix prices.
  • Violence between Israel and Palestinians.
  • Ailments affecting veterans of the first Gulf War. The panel drew criticism from veterans' groups by concluding that stress was the most likely cause of some illnesses suffered by thousands of veterans, not exposure to chemical warfare or smoke and dust from depleted uranium ammunition.

In a 1996 memoir, Rudman wrote of behind-the-scenes drama involving two high-profile Supreme Court nominees.

He confessed that he voted to confirm Clarence Thomas to preserve his ability to influence the appointment of federal judges and to get federal money for his home state.

"It isn't a vote I'm proud of, but it's a textbook example of how our system works," Rudman wrote in "Combat: Twelve Years in the U.S. Senate." He said he didn't think Thomas was "even close to being" the best candidate for the job.

Thomas won confirmation in 1991 by a 52-48 vote after a showdown hearing with former colleague Anita Hill, who accused him of sexual harassment.

"If my vote had been the deciding one, I would have voted against Thomas, no matter what the consequences," he wrote. "But once it was clear that he would be confirmed, I made a political decision."

He said that partly because he hadn't opposed Thomas, he was able to get the first President Bush to nominate three candidates for federal judgeships.

In the book, Rudman also wrote of another Supreme Court nomination that was much closer to his heart, that of his long-time friend and former deputy in the state attorney general's office, David Souter.

He wrote that the very private Souter appeared ready to walk away from the nomination before confirmation hearings because he was being portrayed in news stories as a weirdo or possible gay because he was 50, single and lived in a little farmhouse crammed with books.

"Finally, I grabbed his shoulders," Rudman wrote. "'David, I know what you're going through,' I declared. 'It's outrageous what they're doing to you. But it's your destiny to serve on the Supreme Court. I've believed in that for a long time. Don't let them get to you.'"

After five hours of emotional conversation, Souter decided to push on.

In 1997, Souter helped dedicate a federal court house in Concord to Rudman. He said it made sense to name the sprawling complex after Rudman because of his reputation as a reasoning and reasonable man.

"The architects had no idea the building would be in Senator Rudman's name or they wouldn't have built such a small building," he joked.
